I have had so many of you reach out to me and say “What the heck are you doing for your workouts?!”
Honestly, it took me a good 10 years to get to a place where I really ENJOYED exercise and moving my body. For most of my young adult life I used exercise as a punishment to beat down my body into submitting to the unattainable body ideals that I had felt so ashamed of not having.
For years I did things I hated, worked out for hours at a time, and ate practically nothing I enjoyed just to stay thin enough to be acceptable. After taking about a 18 month break from anything health and fitness related to ‘reset’ I found a couple of things:
Intuitively eating was right for me. Meaning: eating what my body craves when my body craves it. Indulging when I want. And losing ALL guilt associated with foods and any language that made a food bad or good.
Intuitive exercise was right for me. Meaning: I could not see myself following a program from start to finish EVER and I always believed there had to be something wrong with my will power or commitment. Turns out, my desire to follow my body’s cues and eat what I want, when I want….is just the same in the movement realm. Listening to my body and choosing exercise based on how I wanted to feel was the best choice for me and the ONLY way I don’t burn out or turn it into a competition for burning the most calories or losing the most weight.
And finally, and MOST IMPORTANTLY….I THREW AWAY MY SCALE. I actually did this several years ago, and it was the most impactful thing I have ever done for my mental wellbeing. Yes, I may be a few sizes larger, but it has nothing to do with cutting the chains of being tied to the number on the scale and EVERYTHING to do with allowing my body to fluctuate and find its happy place!
