Living as a plus size woman has often limited my ability to express myself through what I wear. Fashion, for me, is a way to wear my joy. I get to piece things together that tell a story, that show others who I am before I even get to say a word, the way I adorn my beautiful body speaks quite loudly….and for a very long time I felt very stifled by the drab, boring choices I had that would fit my size 18/20 body OR I avoided shopping altogether because I didn’t believe I deserved pretty things.
I can’t speak for all women, but I know that my wish to is to not feel separate than others. I want to feel included, thought of, that I belong…and chances are so do you. I want to feel that when I walk into a room, the clothes I wear accentuate who I am.
I was honored to be chosen to participate in a new campaign for the new extended sizes range at @loft Plus Sizes. I love things that have little details, patterns, unexpected interest…and that is why I loved these two pieces. As a busy mom, I dress very casually, but that doesn’t mean that I have to sacrifice style. The raised polka dots and boat neck gave this normal white sweater a totally unique makeover. I paired it with jeans, but it’s perfect with a pencil skirt or slacks too! And because I am always on a constant quest to try ALL THE DENIM, I grabbed these skinny ankle jeans that have a double fringe detail at the ankle…subtle but totally cute!
Fashion is all about doing you, and plus size fashion should be no different! That can be such a liberating thing, but also daunting if you don’t know what your style is. With more and more plus size choices, YOU get to start choosing for yourself what you want to put on your body. I know that navigating style as a plus size woman can be overwhelming, so I wanted to share 3 of my top tips when establishing your wardrobe:
- Choose what brings you joy: What you wear can drastically affect the way you feel about yourself, so make sure that when you are shopping you are choosing items that LIGHT you up.
- Stop waiting to lose the weight: the worst thing you can do is constantly go into a closet full of clothes that don’t fit because you are determined to get off that ‘stubborn weight’ Girl, you deserve to love what you wear now and you deserve to have clothes that FIT. Get rid of some of those oldies, they have lived their best life in your closet, it’s time for them to move on and make way for this new season!
- Go out on a limb: You may be reluctant to try colorful pieces or items with more elaborate details. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing better than a classic white T and jeans, but push yourself a little bit to use clothes to express yourself and that force you to exercise that confidence muscle. The more you do it, the easier it becomes! Not ready to go all out? Pick items with accent colors that you can play up with accessories, or little unexpected details like my sweater and jeans!
